Mezzanines

The ITS Advantage in Mezzanine Solution

Mezzanines, also known as structural steel platforms, are a partial level intermediate floor within a building, but usually not extending over the entire floor space. For companies that are looking to fully utilize their existing overhead space in order to operate more efficiently and profitably, mezzanines built and installed by Industrial Technology Services can serve as a game-changing solution.

For over 20 years, ITS has helped companies expand the potential of their operations by providing high quality, affordable steel mezzanine options that offer flexibility, cost-effectiveness and the ability to adapt to changing business needs.

Types of Mezzanines

Designed to suit a number of purposes and accommodate specific customer requirements, ITS offers several mezzanine options, including:

Free-standing Mezzanine

This type of mezzanine is an independent structure that does not rely on existing building columns or walls for support. Ideal in open warehouse or industrial spaces, a free-standing mezzanine can be relocated or modified with ease.

Structural Mezzanine

Made from steel beams and columns and designed to support heavy loads, a structural mezzanine is exceptional for use in industrial and manufacturing operations.

Rack-supported Mezzanine

A rack-supported mezzanine utilizes existing rack framework as part of the support structure. Commonly used for storage purposes in warehouses and distribution centers, this mezzanine represents a cost-effective solution that maximizes both floor and vertical space.

Custom-built Mezzanine

This is an ITS strong suit. We offer tailor-made mezzanines designed to meet specific customer requirements. The result is a custom-built mezzanine that optimizes space and functionality based on a customer’s individual needs. Customization options include:

  • Decking Solutions: corrugated steel, resin, wood, concrete and more
  • Safety Features: gates, guardrails and staircases
  • Additional Equipment: conveyors, lifts, storage units and more
  • Electrical and Lighting Systems
  • Color Options
  • Fire Suppression

The Many Benefits of Mezzanines

Typically located within industrial, commercial and warehouse spaces, mezzanines can be installed over manufacturing machinery, storage areas, conveyors and more. This can help manufacturers and businesses effectively double their floor area—and that’s just for starters. Additional benefits of mezzanines include:

Cost-effective Alternative to Expansion or Relocation

Expanding to a new location to accommodate growth can be a costly expense. However, when a business utilizes their existing vertical space by installing a mezzanine, it can eliminate the need for new construction and avoid the cost of property acquisition, utilities and taxes

Flexibility

Mezzanines are easy to construct, modify or relocate based on the evolving needs of our customers. They’re also versatile. Businesses often use them for added storage, office space, production areas and more.

Compliance and Safety

An important feature of mezzanines is their customizable nature—they can be designed to meet local building codes and regulations, load capacity requirements, accessibility features and ceiling height requirements. To help ensure worker safety, our mezzanine can easily be equipped with staircases, guardrails and fire exits (where applicable).

Structural Mezzanines Serve an Expansive Array of Applications

With the ability to create increased space within existing buildings, mezzanines can be used for various purposes. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Warehouses and Distribution Centers

The additional floor space created by mezzanines can be used as valuable storage space for raw materials, inventory, finished goods and more. The same extra space can also be used to house workshops or offices.

Manufacturing and Industrial Facilities

Mezzanines can play a valuable role in manufacturing and industrial facilities by affording extra space for production areas, equipment storage (above the main floor), differentiation of processes, access to elevated equipment or machinery, creation of control rooms or observation areas, support for catwalks and maintenance platforms, and more.

Automotive Industry

Mezzanines are utilized in the automotive industry for many purposes including elevated work platforms in assembly plants, additional storage space for parts and components, housing for quality control or inspection areas above production lines and much more.

Government Facilities

Mezzanines can be used within government facilities to increase capacity in archival facilities or record storage centers, create secure, elevated areas in intelligence or defense facilities, add office space in government buildings with high ceilings and to provide raised platforms in emergency operations centers.

Energy Storage Solutions

Applications for mezzanines within the aerospace industry include multi-level assembly areas for large aircraft, housing of specialized testing equipment above main hangar floors, elevated access to spacecraft or satellite components and observation decks or control rooms in launch facilities.

Retail Spaces

Mezzanines are used by retail stores for extra display space, specialty departments, VIP sections, lounges and additional seating areas. Other uses include stockrooms and storage areas above the sales floor.

Exhibition Halls, Museums and Public Facilities

Another use for mezzanines in public spaces is multi-level display areas and elevated viewing platforms for large exhibits within exhibition halls and museums.

Steel Mezzanine Fabrication & Installation Process

The fabrication and installation process of a mezzanine manufactured by ITS involves multiple steps to help ensure exceptional quality, functionality and safety. These steps include the following:

Site Evaluation and Planning

We begin by assessing the available space and our customer’s specific requirements. In doing so, we examine the purpose of the mezzanine, access points, load requirements and any additional design considerations.

Design and Engineering

During this phase, we work with your architects and engineers to create detailed drawings and specifications that adhere to local building codes and regulations. Structural engineers may be required to help ensure the stability and structural integrity of the mezzanine.

Material Selection

Factors that include durability, load capacity, aesthetics and budget are considered during the material selection phase to ensure that the optimal materials are used for the mezzanine.

Manufacturing Process

This process involves the cutting and shaping of raw steel components to the required dimensions using various methods including plasma cutting, oxy-fuel cutting or laser cutting.

On-site assembly and installation

Based on design and engineering plans, the frame of the mezzanine structure is assembled on-site. Steel beams and columns are erected and securely bolted or welded to ensure strength and stability. Next, the flooring is attached to the frame, creating a strong, stable and safe surface. This is followed by the installation of safety rails and stairs, which are also manufactured by ITS.
